Ginseng or dried herbs are usually what comes to mind when someone hears traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). But no, traditional Chinese medicine isn’t all about the herbs. Several mind and body practices are also observed. It is a league of its own when it comes to health care which includes traditional therapies. 

 Chinese Medicine

Not only Asians but people around the globe attest to the positive effects of such practice in pain, Arthritis, sleep issues, and stress. There are many approaches and techniques in Chinese medicine. These include acupuncture, massage, exercise, herbal antidotes, and dietary management. 

  1. Acupuncture 

Acupuncture is the treatment involving the insertion of needles into strategic pressure points of the body to differing depths. The needles are very thin. The idea is to manipulate the needles to adjust the flow of energy in the body. Acupuncture is mainly used to address pain anywhere in the body, stress, or anxiety. 

  1. Massage 

There are a few types of massage in traditional Chinese medicine. The energy, or Qi as it is called, is also manipulated through massage and acupressure without the need for needles. Tui Na massage, for example, uses massage and acupressure. The treatment can be quite strenuous for the clinician. Heat, ointments, and herbal compresses may be used to maximize the results of treating musculoskeletal issues and chronic pain. Cupping and scraping go hand in hand. It is a form of massage wherein suction cups are used. Smoke from a flammable substance is placed inside the cups before suction. When the smoke cools, it creates a vacuum against the skin. After this treatment, your skin is scraped using a smooth jade, stone, or bone to remove the toxins that are confined in your skin.  

  1. Exercise 

A Chinese therapeutic exercise or Qi Gong is related to Tai Chi but focuses more on breathing and meditation for health and spirituality. Tai Chi as a training exercise can be used for defense purposes. As a health exercise, it is favored for its ability to fight stress and coordinate mind and body harmony. It is also used as a preventative approach. 

  1. Herbal Antidotes 

In the practice of TCM, practitioners use herbs and incorporate them into other techniques (e.g. Tui Na). Traditional Chinese herbs come from the natural leaves, stems, roots, barks, flowers, and seeds of some plants. These herbs are believed to have the ability to mend yin and yang imbalances of the body. They are considered to be able to treat various issues like stress, menstrual cramps, allergies, digestive problems, and cardiovascular disorders. Herbal medicines are just as potent as drugs and should, therefore, be used with caution and treated with respect as you would medications.  

  1. Dietary Management 

The goal of this approach is to correct imbalances – furnish deficient nutrients and elements in the body or control excessive amounts of it. Chinese nutrition is composed of all 5 tastes: sweet, spicy, sour, salty, and bitter. In TCM, nutrition is intended to be the first line of defense in health care.
